Working the Waiver Wire - Week 15

If you're reading this, you're one of the lucky few that has make it to the fantasy finals. I assume you're  not one of the many people who threw their remotes at the TV and cursed fantasy football forever. So Congrats! A bunch of our favorite players showed up big in Week 15 - Ray Rice, Mike Williams, Ryan Torain, Jon Kitna, Mike Vick. On a personal note, I finally had the elusive perfect weekend with an 8-0 record (granted, one of those matchups was for 5th place, but I'm going to the finals in 7 others) It's a Christmas Miracle!

Don't forget this is the first weekend with Saturday Night Football. So don't put off your post-Thursday decisions until Sunday morning because you will miss out on some excellent Dallas players when they face Arizona on Christmas night.

There are a few players to consider picking up if you're in a deep league, or just lost Terrell Owens.
But given that it's the last week, I would recommend looking at your opponent's team and seeing if he needs a better Defense, Kicker, or TE, and block him by hoarding the decent players at that position. I'm debating between 3 defenses and my opponent has Cleveland who face Baltimore this weekend, so I'll just pick up all 3 defenses. It feels so wrong dropping Johnny Knox or Josh Freeman for a 3rd defense, but who cares at this point. Your opponent is not going to pickup and start one of your reserves against you.

Toby Gerhart (MIN QB)
With the surprising deactivation of Adrian Peterson, Gerhart stepped in and performed pretty well considering it was his first start and it was in horrible weather. Gerhart rushed for 77 yards and caught 3 balls for 18 yards, displaying nice awareness on the field - it must be that Stanford education. I don't love his matchup with Philly, if AP is once again inactive, but you could do worse than Gerhart.

Joe Webb (MIN QB / WR)
Webb should absolutely not be starting as your QB, but in Yahoo leagues, I'm sure you've heard he's WR eligible. When it was announced that Favre would start Monday's game, perhaps an owner dropped Webb for Earl Bennett to squeeze a few Monday Night points out. If Webb's available in your Yahoo league, pick him up. It looks very likely that Brett Favre's storied career is finally over. With Favre, it's always a controversy: will he or won't he play another season, will he or won't he end his streak, will he or won't he text you a naughty pic for Xmas. But I'd have to guess after Favre's concussion that Webb will start Sunday against Philly. He looked like a pretty bad QB against the Bears. But he put together about 10 points (depending on your scoring system). The Eagles are really tough, but no tougher than the Bears, so I expect a similar 10 point game from Webb in Week Sixteen. If that's more than you expect from your WR3, pick up Webb and plug him in. There are some ethical questions about exploiting this loophole / oversight from Yahoo. Some have said that if you win using Webb, you might as well put an asterisk next to your team's name. I think that's BS. All is fair in love and fantasy football. The savviest owner, with the quickest finger deserves the benefit of Webb. So start him and don't think for one second that you're going on my naughty list.

Rex Grossman (WAS QB)
Grossman made the coaching staff look brilliant when he significantly outproduced Donovan McNabb, with 322 yards and 4 TDs. He's making effective use of Santana Moss, Anthony Armstrong, and his RBs out of the backfield. If you need a QB, he could put up big numbers against Jacksonville this weekend.

Tim Tebow (DEN QB)
Tebow started in place of Kyle Orton, who has an injury, and sucks. Tebow only threw for 138 yards and a TD, but added 78 rushing yards and a TD. I would expect similar output this week against Houston's generous defense. Maybe Tebow will throw a few more yards, and run for a few less.

Anthony Armstrong (WAS WR)
Armstrong is a solid deep threat and may continue to experience a bump in production with Grossman at the helm. He put together 5 catches and 100 yards on Sunday, and can easily do it again against a generous Jacksonville secondary this weekend.

Andrew Caldwell (CIN WR)
With Terrell Owens out for the year, Caldwell will take his place in the starting lineup. Caldwell filled in nicely, catching 4 balls for 89 yards against Cleveland. But I cannot imagine starting him in your fantasy superbowl against San Diego's staunch D.
