Almost There! (TEs, Updates, and Drafts)

Only two more days! Magic is in the air. It's time to shift discussion from "Who do I draft," to "Who do I start week one!" Today's post is a little grab bag of sorts.

UPDATES:
First things first: We've updated all our draft rankings (Top 200 and each position) for those of you late drafters. I've also updated the RB Situations page after this week's roster cut bonanza.

In terms of weekly Who To Start rankings, we at FFMVP will provide 2 things:

1st, "Hot Or Not" is a list of a few guys who are on the bubble of starting in standard leagues. We will not tell you to start Peyton Manning because that's obvious no matter what. We will tell you to sit Chad Henne and start Kyle Orton or Matthew Stafford instead this week, if you, like me, waited until the very end to grab multiple QBs - a quarterback by committee (QBBC).

2nd, each week we will update our Matchup Mean Projections (please comment below if you can think of a cooler name for this). We plan to keep track of every team's average yards allowed through the air and on the ground. Then we will keep track of every player's average performance, and share of the teams carries for RBs. For example, in week 5, McNabb will play the Packers. Let's pretend at that point, McNabb is averaging 16 fantasy points per game, and the Packers are providing an average of 12 fantasy points per game to opposing QBs. Then our predicted fantasy point projection for McNabb will be 14 points. It's not too complicated, and will be very fluky in the early weeks. It won't be a recommended rankings so much as it will be a useful tool.

TEs:
At the conclusion of the voter poll, Zach Miller dominated the other TEs in votes. These 4 guys (Winslow, Cooley, Daniels, and Z. Miller) all seem relatively close. But everyone seems to have a different opinion on their favorite value TE. We actually have Winslow as the highest ranked, even though he garnered the least amount of votes. I guess you guys don't trust our rankings, which is fine - think for yourselves. But the takeaway is that one of these guys will fall to you when the time is right. I don't have a rule about which round I'll get my TE in. As proof, in my leagues, I have Vernon Davis, Jermichael Finley, Zach Miller, Mercedes Lewis, Jeremy Shockey, and 3 Chris Cooleys so far. So take whoever falls to you at a good value.

Drafts:
Here are 2 more drafts for you to pick apart. They use standard scoring but keep in mind the first draft is a 16 person MAN's league, and the 2nd is a 14 person league. So if you think my team looks weak, "You should see the other guy." Once again, I'll list the overall spot at which I drafted him, and then the value as measured by the difference between where I drafted him and his spot on our Top 200.

Draft 1: 16 Teams
1 Chris Johnson Value: 0
32 Calvin Johnson +13
33 Marques Colston +6
64 Jermichael Finley +7
65 Wes Welker +25
96 Ricky Williams +26
97 Fred Jackson +12
128 Matt Stafford +15
129 Santonio Holmes +28
160 Fred Taylor +32
161 Vince Young +32
192 Nate Burleson +71
193 Kyle Orton +34 (One of my 3 QBs will be trade-bait later on.)
224 David Buehler
225 San Diego

Draft 2: 14 Teams
5 Frank Gore Value +1
24 Miles Austin +7
33 Marques Colston +6
52 Matt Forte +9
61 Jerome Harrison +10
80 Brandon Jacobs +18
89 Carnell Williams +10
108 Carson Palmer +6
117 Chris Cooley +22
136 Santonio Holmes +35
145 Chad Henne +25
164 Louis Murphy +31
173 Laurent Robinson +41
192 David Buehler
201 Chicago

Feel free to post your own team (and potentially draft spots and Value) below for readers and myself to critique.

you got colston in both drafts. they spread the ball around a lot, but this could be the year that colston elevates to top 5 guy

hey i got andre johnson, Peyton, Boldin, Forte, Spiller, Tony Gonzalez, Jerome harrison, robert meachem, steve breaston, McFadden, Mike WIlliams, Pittsbugh D, Gaffney, Longwell. what do you think? (12 team league)

Nice value rb picks. but your depth Wr picks - meachem, and breaston - are kinda weak. with johnson and boldin though, you should be fine. don't be surprised when Mike williams outperforms meachem and breaston.

Most Valuable Player Indicator.

Rams, getting Jerome Harrison in the seventh round definitely saves your rb situation, that must have felt good

I think McNabb is the most undervalued player in fantasy this season.

Discuss.

Mcnabb is great but ports isn't westbrook, cooley isn't celek, moss isn't Jackson and Thomas isn't maclin, not too mention Washington doesn't have as strong a line as Philly, I think mcnabb will finish twelfth to fifteenth of quarterbacks...not exactly an underrated sleeper when he wouldn't even be starting in standard leagues

That raises the question from the earlier Phil Rivers / Vincent Jackson debate - do the receivers make the QB, or does the QB make the receivers? I think that's a great point that every position relevant to a QB's success (WR1, WR2, TE, RB, and O-line) are worse in Washington (though Cooley may give Celek a run for his money). McNabb is not the most accurate guy, but he'll make plays and he's still top 10 in rush yards and rushing TDs for QBs. We currently have McNabb ranked 14th and I'll stand by that. Though if you grabbed him above Eli and Matt Ryan, I wouldn't fault you.

I second the Mean Green MatchupMachine

Why not the Mean Mean Matchup Machine?

how do you value housh as a raven?

Brett said...

I don't like Housh at all. He will be Flacco's 4th or 5th receiving option after Boldin, Mason, Rice, and maybe even Heap. I would drop Housh in a 12 team league if there's anyone decent available (either Mike Williams', Louis Murphy, Laurent Robinson, Jabar Gaffney, Kareen Huggins).
